Staff Picks: Fantastic Mr. Fox

“One of those slovenly farmers is probably wearing my tail for a necktie.” – Mr. Fox

There is perhaps no movie better suited for the beginning of autumn than Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Based off of the children’s novel of the same name by British author Roald Dahl, Anderson’s adaptation was somewhat overshadowed upon its release in 2009 by Pixar’s Up and Henry Selick’s Coraline.

But Fantastic Mr. Fox is a charming, lighthearted, fast-paced, and gravely under-appreciated masterpiece.

Anderson’s penchant for detail shines through in the film’s intricate stop-motion animation. Individual hairs twitch as each character moves and speaks; facial expressions subtly change mid-sentence.

Decked out in corduroy and countless cozy shades of orange and brown, Fantastic Mr. Fox is the embodiment of autumn.
