Indoor track and field season has begun, and with the outdoor season rapidly approaching, students and athletes alike are in agreement that they are excited for a great season.
Heritage track and field has a staggering 66 boys and 40 girls. Track is a staple sport, with many students in support of our runners, throwers and jumpers. This year in particular, the indoor track season has started and the team is in full effect with their hard work paying off.
“My friends and I are so excited to support the team and see all the progress they will make this year,” said senior Ava Gladon as she believes that track is a very important and eventful part of our school.
Setting the team off on a strong start, they headed up to Kansas to show what Heritage is made of. They entered into the Prentice Gudgen Invitational, displaying their natural talent and grit. They took some newcomers along with well known members of the team, including contenders like Jude Hobbs (12) and Jake Stout (12). They then took these efforts and pride back again to Kansas the following weekend.
“The indoor season is a helpful experience and I personally bested in every event, and it’s great to run against good competition,” said Tucker Blake (12).
The second Washburn meet at Kansas was very anticipated by the team, being the fact that it’s
an overnight trip and more than 4 hours from home. There were many contributing factors that led to this meet but yet the Heritage Eagles persevered. Nora Wise (10) broke the 800 meter, being a full half mile, running a school record 2.25 minutes and Alex Moreno (10) broke the school weight throw with 38.78 feet. And many others of the team breaking their PR’s, widely known as personal records.
“We got an early start on the indoor season, and we are already ahead of where we were last year,” said the boys head coach for track and field, Jason Upton.
Next on their agenda was state, but unfortunately for them, the indoor season had to be cut short due to the inclement weather. They will continue their efforts on Feb. 26 at their first track meet of the outdoor season.
“I feel like I took advantage of the indoor season and I can’t wait for the outdoor season,” said Jude Hobbs (12).
