Staff Picks: Beach House’s “Depression Cherry”

Sub Pop

American dream pop duo Beach House released its fifth studio album, Depression Cherry, through Sub Pop on August 28.

The group’s first studio album since 2012’s BloomDepression Cherry features more of the band’s surreal, echoey electronic pop. Weaved amongst French-born lead singer Victoria Legrand’s whispery vocals, however, is a palpable tension not found in Beach House’s earlier work. Fans of Bloom and Teen Dream will immediately notice the occasional garish screech of an electric guitar.

Despite these subtle alterations to the band’s long-unchanged sound, Depression Cherry evokes much of the same bittersweet nostalgia as the band’s previous albums and is another success.
