Plato’s Closet is advertised as a trendy, low cost store that buys and sells second hand, designer clothing. “We buy gently used teen and young adult style clothing and accessories that are name brands, cool, hip, trendy, clean and in good condition. With no appointment needed, we buy every day and will pay you on the spot! Most of our stores buy and sell girls sizes 0 to 22 and guys sizes 28 to 40 waist, and we typically buy current styles that are still in the mall.”

Plato’s Closet is an appealing place to sell to, and pick up extra cash, until you realize how little they actually give you for your clothing, and/or shoes. Their total review count on Google ranks as a 3.3 star rating, and reviews left are often by people criticizing the lack of consistency of the clothing bought by Plato’s Closet. Recently, I asked people on their opinions of Plato’s Closet, and have gotten all negative comments saying they are unfair. Ilen Marquez, graduate of Heritage, said “I gave them a brand new Forever 21 dress, and they only gave me $2.” I’ve experienced a similar, and reoccurring situation with them as well.

Recently, I sold to them clothing ranging from Worthington, Boutique, Old Navy; like-new Adidas shoes, and boots. I was given an overall of $36. The amount was not the problem in the beginning, until I saw the Adidas I had sold to them were now being sold for $35.  It was infuriating to find out that the same shoes I had only received a couple dollars for were being sold at a significantly higher price. The other clothing, I only received around $1.

In addition, I would also like to mention their lack of plus size clothing for women and men. I’ve seen a small section dedicated to plus women shirts. Although this could be due to chance, it is safe to mention that their statements are misleading in what they often buy and sell. One thing for certain is the fact that I will no longer be selling to Plato’s Closet, especially if I’m not receiving the same amount that they are going to sell for.
