National French Toast Day

National French Toast Day

Andrea Martinez, Writer

Today is November 28th, a day labeled as National French Toast Day. Don’t be fooled by its name, French toast did not come from France. The earliest mention was during the Roman Empire in Europe, later making its way to America in its early settlement along with its present name. In England, it was a simple and inexpensive dish that the poor could afford thus giving it the name, “poor knights pudding.” On the other hand, France came up with the name “pan perdu” meaning “lost bread” because they used lost or stale bread for the dish. Italy seems to keep yet a different name, “mozzarella en carrozza,” which can be translated to “mozzarella in a carriage.” Italy’s french toast requires them to soak the bread in eggs and fry it with slices of mozzarella between slices. Now on to getting your hands on some french toast!
