Harriet Tubman to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill
May 10, 2016
On April 20th, 2016 Treasury Secretary Jacob L. Lew announced that Harriet Tubman, the former slave and abolitionist, would replace slave-holder Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Jackson’s image will be moved to the back of the bill alongside a picture of the White House. Women and civil rights leaders will be added to the $5 and $10 bills.
Tubman will be the first female portrayed on U.S. currency. The currency change was initially scheduled to be on the $10 bill, replacing first Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. However, due to Hamilton’s recent rise in popularity thanks to the musical, and complaints that the $10 was not a widely enough circulated bill, Lew announced that the $20 bill would be receiving the facelift instead. Hamilton and Lincoln will remain on the $5 and $10 bills, and other civil rights and women’s rights activists will be added to the backs of those bills.
