Wilmington, Delaware – a sixteen-year-old girl died after a school altercation at Howard High School of Technology. The teen, Amy Joyner, was known for being nice and avoiding fights. She passed away Thursday while at the hospital.

According to some sources, Joyner was in a one on one fight, but other girls jumped in and attacked Joyner. One schoolmate reported, “She was real nice,” said Shane Gallagher, a member of the wrestling team. “She treated us like family and we treated her like family, and it hurts our hearts we can’t ever see her anymore.”

The school has an anti-bullying campaign that happens every spring. A sad irony as no one stepped in to help Joyner and stop the fight. People have said that the fight was over a boy that Joyner was supposedly dating at the time, although others argue that it was not over a boy. Three students have been indefinitely suspended after being questioned by the police. The police have not pressed charges yet, and are still investigating.

School fights have become something students encourage, and act as if it is daily entertainment. I am also guilty of wanting to see a fight once in a while. However, once something like this actually happens, it is eye opening. Before getting into a fight nobody really thinks of the consequence, such as somebody losing their life. Many teens don’t think about anything once their mind has been made up. They want to fight one person, and that is what’s going to happen.

Fights are immature and should not happen over small disagreements, such as a boy you are dating and then he cheats on you so you want to fight the girl he cheated with. You never know if someone could lose their lives during an altercation that could easily be talked over.
