Staff Pick: History of Future Folk
April 15, 2016
“The best alien-folk-duo-SciFi-action-romance-comedy movie ever made.” That’s how the movie poster described The History of Future Folk and it couldn’t be more accurate.
The movie tells the history of Future Folk, the real life alien bluegrass band that plays mostly in and around New York City. The story tells us that General Trius, now called Bill Hunt, journeyed to Earth to save the people of his home planet, Hondo. The General was supposed to release a virus on Earth to make way for the invading Hondonians, but heard music (which does not exist on Hondo) and could not destroy the planet. Fast forward a decade or so and the Mighty Kevin has been sent to assassinate General Trius, only to fall in love with Earth music (and an Earth woman) as well. Together, General Trius and the Mighty Kevin must save both planets and the women they love, while performing their special brand of bluegrass music. There’s love, betrayal, tango dancing, and more as they find a way to save us all.
The music is a fantastic blend of guitar, banjo, kazoo, and comedy vocals. Even those who aren’t fans of bluegrass music will find things to love in this movie. Nils d’Aulaire and Jay Klaitz (General Trius and the Mighty Kevin, respectively) aren’t the world’s greatest actors, but the sincerity with which they play and sing will help you to forget that as you fall in love with their story. Songs like “Over the Moon” will melt your heart while “Space Worms” will split your sides with laughter.
The History of Future Folk is currently available on Netflix and their music (including those mentioned and other songs that will explain the dangers of space to you and why we have dogs on Earth!) can also be found on iTunes and Spotify.
