Remembering Carrie Fisher

Juan Palma, Writer

On December 27th, 2016, Carrie Fisher passed away due to a severe heart attack she suffered on a plane. Carrie was most well known for her role in the Star Wars films. She portrayed the character Princess Leia, who was an important character in the series. She was a huge role model to many young girls. She openly talked about her personal problems such as being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. She wasn’t shy about talking about whatever she could. Her roles in film and being so open about her problems made fans and the media fall in love with her. She also wasn’t an actor she wrote a book called Postcards from the Edge, which was later adapted to a film which she worked on but didn’t star in. Before her death, she shot all of her scenes in the next Star Wars film. Disney has been negotiating with her estate to try to get the rights to bring back the late actor through special effects (an effect they used in the Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One to bring back Peter Cushing and a young Carrie Fisher) for the ninth main Star Wars film.

Thousands of people were devastated to learn of her death. Co-stars from the Star Wars films were extremely saddened by this news. Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo) worked with Carrie during the original Star Wars films and Star Wars The Force Awakens. When the news hit that Carrie passed away Mark Hamill tweeted a picture of the both of them on the set of the original Star Wars and said “no words #devestated” Carrie, of course, didn’t only appear in Star Wars she was also a recurring character in the adult animated comedy Family Guy. The creator of Family Guy Seth McFarlane tweeted “Carrie Fisher was smart, funny, talented, surprising, and always a hell of a fun time to be around. Family Guy will miss her immensely.”

Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, was extremely devastated by the passing of her daughter. One day after Carrie passed away Debbie also passed away due to a stroke. They were both buried together. Todd Fisher, son of Debbie Reynolds and sister of Carrie Fisher, said: “My mother and sister are together now.”
