President Trump causes rift with Australia
February 6, 2017
President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull talked over the phone last Saturday. Nothing unusual about a phone call between two world leaders. However, details of the phone call were revealed late Wednesday, and it appears that the call did not end on friendly terms. It was described as a “heated exchange” by a source that did not want to be identified.
The phone call came to an end after President Trump abruptly hung up on the Australian Prime Minister. The topic of discussion was the transfer of 1,250 refugees from Australia that former President Obama had agreed to take in. The current president did not like the agreement and refused to take them in, causing harsh words to be said. The flare-up is threatening to cause damage to the relationship between the United States and Australia. Australia is a long-time ally of the US and has fought alongside the United States in every war since the very first World War.
Prime Minister Turnbull refused to comment in detail about the phone call that took place last week, stating, “It’s better that these things, these conversations are conducted candidly, frankly, privately.” Both men have offered contradicting endings with President Trump saying he will “study the deal,” and Prime Minister Turnbull stating that the United States has agreed to accept the refugees.
Prime Minister Turnbull attempted to calm the fire by stating that the relations between both countries remain robust. “I can assure you the relationship is very strong. The fact that we received the assurance that we did, the fact that it was confirmed, the very extensive engagement we have with the new administration underlines the closeness of the alliance,” he said.
So far it remains unclear what will happen with the refugees that were supposed to be brought into the United States from the Pacific islands of Nauru and Manus. This is the second time in about a week that President Trump has bumped heads with other world leaders. A week earlier, President Enrique Pena Nieto of Mexico canceled a planned meeting between the two after Trump signed executive order to construct a wall along the southern border and declared that Mexico would pay for it.
Hold on tight because we still have three years, 11 months, and 16 days left on this wild ride.
