Neymar Transfers
August 30, 2017
Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. is currently the most expensive transfer in soccer history. His transfer cost PSG $263 million. Barcelona could have avoided this transfer by paying him a $26 million loyalty clause, but they refused, which angered Neymar and his dad, forcing the move to the Parisian club. Fans from around the world were very unhappy with Neymar’s decision. Many fans are also angry with the Barcelona board for including a release clause in his contract.
This is a huge bargain for PSG, as they brought on a young and talented Brazilian star. Neymar had a very hard decision to make. He either stayed at Barcelona with, undoubtedly the world’s best player, Messi, or leave to a team where he wouldn’t be the shadow of anybody. His decision had been there, but not clear since the beginning of the summer. PSG made an offer to Barcelona for Neymar, triggering his $220 million release clause. Barcelona could not do anything to avoid that offer because once a club offers the amount of the release clause, the player is the one to decide if he stays at the club, or if he leaves. In this case, Neymar decided to leave, making it clear to everybody that he wants to make a name for himself and become a team leader.
PSG fans are very excited for his arrival as he is one of the future Balon D’Or ( a Balon D’Or is an award given to a player who has had an extraordinary season) candidates in the future. Not only that, but he has the potential to become one of, if not the greatest player in the world. As for Barcelona fans, Neymar’s departure is of mixed emotions. After making it known by posting a video on social media of his departure, many fans started to burn his shirts from both the Barcelona team and the Brazilian International team. This makes it a pretty clear sign that if he were to want to return in the future, he would no longer be welcome at the club- at least not by the fans.
Not only has Neymar’s transfer caused Barcelona fans to panic, but it has also caused a massive inflation to the transfer market. Players who would’ve cost $40 million now cost $100 million. This is becoming a huge headache for most clubs as they now have to overpay for a player.
Neymar has left Barcelona on an unhappy note, which isn’t ideal if he considers coming back to the club in the future. He has left Barcelona with another problem to solve: who is going to replace Neymar? While at Paris, he is arriving with a mentality to become one of the greatest players of all time.
