News Flash: Court Rules Against Obama Administration on Immigration Policy
November 13, 2015
On Monday, November 9th, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled President Obama’s executive orders on immigration illegal. AP Government students will know executive orders as laws put into effect by the President without passing through Congress.
The executive orders called to attention are the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Conservative opponents argue these laws shielding millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation undermine Congress’s power to write U.S. laws.
The U.S. Constitution grants exclusive power over immigration to the federal government. The Obama administration plans to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
