March is Women’s Month
March 4, 2016
“Women’s history is women’s right.” During the month of March, people are celebrating women’s accomplishments. From science to politics, we are honoring amazing women who have helped change history.
Before Women’s History the U.S. recognized Women’s History Week, and before that, a single day (Women’s History Day) dedicated to Women’s History. When activists extended the day to a week, they wanted to revise American history that has ignored women’s contributions in society and history.
Women’s History Day was established on February 28, 1909, in New York City, as national observance organized by the Socialist Party. Women’s History Week was started in 1978, timed around International Women’s Day, and started by U.S. feminist activists and their project for “National Women’s History Month Project.” In 1987, Congress passed a proclamation officially establishing Women’s History Month.
Past years have had themes for Women’s History Month, and this year’s theme is: “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.”
Twitter’s hashtag, #Women’sHistoryMonth has a variety of people sharing women that have helped shape the world.
