FOOTBALL–On Monday, August 21, the freshman War Eagles beat the Fayetteville Bulldogs 19-14 at Fayetteville High School for the first time in school history.
The Heritage freshman football team fought vigorously during the preseason so they would be prepared, and it paid off.
It was close the entire game. However, in the third quarter, Colton Miller [#7] caught an interception to allow the War Eagles to come out on top.
“It was a cover three and the quarterback drew back and the inside receiver ran a post in the middle and I was right there,” Miller said, “It’s not just a one-person effort, the whole team has to do their job to win.”
Colton Miller wasn’t the only player that helped win the game. Aneja Clement [#5] and Jaden Cortez [#9] putting up big yards, mixed with Cortez scoring a touchdown and Clement scoring two, proved them to be vital aspects of the game.
“I got the ball then I was trying to look for a hole and I didn’t find any but both of my tight ends blocked their outside linebacker. So, I sprinted towards the end zone and the opposing team tried tackling me but I maintained balance to stay up and got in the endzone,” Clement said, “I was jogging to the sideline and my main blockers, Connor and Lincoln, created holes for me, as well as Edwin and Matthew. I ran it up the hole they created for about 40 yards.
“A takeaway I have is depending on my linemen and my blockers because, without them, I wouldn’t be able to run anywhere. So, I will always depend on them.” Clement said.
The War Eagles couldn’t have won the game without the defense. They had some improvising stops in the fourth quarter to get the ball back. The 4th down stop with 2 minutes left provided a major boost towards the War Eagles winning the game.
