An overview of Kesha’s case

Last Friday, Kesha was denied her request to break her contract with Sony and leave her current record label, Kemosabe Records, in order to avoid working with executive producer Dr. Luke, whom she had accused of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse.

In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke, her producer (and owner of Kemosabe records), for sexual assault, sexual harassment and battery. According to Kesha, she was subject to emotional and sexual abuse for almost a decade, including being roofied and raped by Dr. Luke. Dr. Luke has, in turn, filed a lawsuit against Kesha for defamation.

In 2011 in an unrelated lawsuit Kesha claimed that Dr. Luke never made sexual advances towards her but in 2014 she said he coerced her into saying that. Dr. Luke has denied all claims and has even come out on twitter to deny the allegations.

Kesha’s request to get out of her contract with Sony was denied leaving her obligated to record her next four albums with Sony though she has been told she does not have to do so under Dr. Luke. However, he legally has the right to produce 6 songs on her album and he could pursue damages if he doesn’t.

While Kesha is going through this trying time her fans and others on twitter have started the hashtag #FreeKesha to show their support. Many celebrities have also come out to show their support. Actresses Lena Dunham and Mariska Hargitay, and musicians Lady Gaga, Fiona Apple, Lorde and Miley Cyrus have all shown support via social media. Taylor Swift also donated $250,000 to Kesha to help her in such a trying time.
