5 Coolest Facts about Outer Space
November 7, 2016
Space is one of the most interesting aspects of science, filled with many possibilities. Today, here are the top 5 coolest facts about outer space!
5. Space is completely silent.
Many don’t know this, but outer space is completely silent. Sound is created by sound waves, which need a specific type of atmosphere to be produced, and since space has no atmosphere, no sound waves are ever present! Radio waves are different, however. They don’t need an atmosphere to exist, so that’s why astronauts can talk to one another in space.
4. One million Earths could fit inside of the Sun.
And you thought the Earth was huge? Compared to the Sun, the Earth is a tennis ball! It would take approximately one million Earths to make up the entire Sun!
3. Nobody knows how many stars are in space.
To this day, nobody – not even scientists – can figure out just how many stars are in outer space, due to the enormous size of the universe. In fact, just in the Milky Way galaxy, there are an estimated 200-400 billion stars! Imagine how many are beyond that!
2. There could be life on Mars.
Besides Earth, the only planet, during this period, that could sustain human life is Mars. In 1986, NASA found fossils that hinted that life could’ve (or still is!) been living on Mars!
1. Other planets have rings.
You may think that Saturn is the only planet that has rings, but actually, Jupiter, Neptune, and even Uranus have multiple rings; they’re just much harder to see because they have much fewer contents in them!
