10 reasons why the Rio Olympics were trash
August 29, 2016
The 2016 Olympics were absolutely horrible this year. The games took place in Rio de Janeiro. There were many complaints including severed body parts floating in a bay, pollution, players and coaches being robbed, and financial state of emergency.
1. When players arrived, they were welcomed to flooding towns and unfinished construction in villages.
2. Pollution has been a huge problem in Rio. Areas and bays where races were supposed to take place are still filled with trash and human waste, even after officials promised to have it cleaned up months ago.
3. In the construction of the Olympics, many Rio natives were displaced from their homes. As the games take place, they were left to sleep on the streets.
4. The Zika virus is still swarming in Rio. Many players and visitors have expressed their concerns about contracting the disease.
5. Players were greeted at the airports by Brazilian police officers with a sign saying “Welcome to Hell”. Police salaries have been delayed, thus halting patrols, and making people worry for their safety.
6. A severed arm and human corpse were removed from Guanabara Bay.
7. Adding on to the trouble in Guanabara Bay, it is plagued by a virus. Three teaspoons of water from Guanabara could lead to a 99% chance of infection.
8. Despite the Ryan Lochte story turning out to be a hoax, several coaches and players were robbed while in Rio. Three members from the Spanish sailing team were robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight, as was an Australian Paralympic sailor and her team. Australian rowing coaches were also robbed at knifepoint.
9. Many players competing in pools, as well as fans, were skeptical of the water quality. One pool had turned green.
10. Rio is also in a state of financial disaster. They are facing the worst recession in decades.
Despite the glaring issues throughout this year’s games, many world records have been shattered, and many gold medals have been earned by countries and athletes across the world. Rio Olympics exposed us to impressive new athletic idols from many different backgrounds.
