This year’s Teacher of the year, Mr. Tom Williams, started teaching in 1977 and has been teaching for 40 years all of which have been spent here in the Rogers school district.  Mr. Williams believes that most of his success as an educator comes from taking the time to get to know each and every one of his students, “To engage students in the classroom I try to connect with the students individually.  I try to find something they’re interested in outside the classroom so that when I ask a question I can direct it through their outside interests if possible.” Mr. Williams predicates the success of his methods, “When I get to connect with a student and get to know what’s going on outside the classroom, it helps me connect better with them inside the classroom.”   Taking this approach to education allows this year’s Teacher of the Year the time to put his students in situations in which they can become successful.  Mr. Williams strives to instill in his students the belief that they can achieve success with proper work ethic and effort.

Mr. Williams was selected teacher of the year by not only being an exceptional teacher, who creates a comfortable, caring, and secure learning environment for all of his students, but also an by being an outstanding basketball coach who understands the importance of teaching young athletes responsibility and leadership skills.  The teacher of the years is nominated by their fellow teachers, and are then selected by principals.  The teacher must display the following criteria in order to be a candidate for teacher of the year:

  • Develops and/or utilizes innovative education programs in the classroom.
  • Participates in extracurricular activities at school.
  • Prioritizes self-improvement through seminars, continuing education, and other professional achievements.
  • Demonstrates leadership and/or mentoring of other staff to improve student and/or adult learning.
  • Contributes to the improvement of school, district, and community.
